Macro Blogging

It's been a good two-and-a-half years at Pioneer JC.

I hope I have touched a few lives in a positive way.

I take away with me several meaningful relationships, I have learnt a few lessons, and I've gained many experiences.

Time now to pack my things, consolidate, and continue on the next stage of the journey.

May/June Holidays

The holidays are finally here. Time to take a quick break and recharge. Time to start exercising again and cleaning up the house. To get ready for baby.

Time also to step back and re-evaluate priorities. I want to read more. Realised that I've quite stopped reading for some time now... Very refreshing to read The Undercover Economist about economics and traffic congestion and coffee and prescription drugs and stuff... It's great to engage intellectually with a variety of issues... kinda like what I was doing during university.

stroke

my hand against hers

the agony of not understanding and
not being understood

piercing gaze
from her wrinkled face
empty and going right through my heart

i see the
pain
she cannot see

laughing at nothing to laugh about
delays sadness

Fame

It's been a long time since I last posted.

September Holidays have come and gone. My first Teachers' Day has also come and gone.

Teaching at PJC has been very fun.

Let me now introduce the main star of this post...

Thin-Ideal Media and Women’s Body Dissatisfaction: Prevention using Downward Social Comparisons on Non-Appearance Dimensions (Ann-Marie Lew, Traci Mann, Hector Myers, Shelley Taylor and Julienne Bower)

Medicare's Search for Effective Obesity Treatments: Diets Are Not the Answer (Mann, Traci; Tomiyama, A. Janet; Westling, Erika; Lew, Ann-Marie; Samuels, Barbra; Chatman, Jason)

The second article is very famous (e.g.), and the full-text is available.

While I Live, I Learn

If it doesn't rain tomorrow morning, I should be cycling to PJC. Soap, shampoo, shoes, towel and a change of clothes are waiting for me at my desk. I think I have socks there, but will bring a pair just in case. Oh, and will bring along a cheap little raincoat. I hope there isn't something I've overlooked! A belt!

They are still having their mid year examinations, and I've just completed my share of the marking. Lessons start next week, so I'm looking forward to interacting with them via mechanisms other than through the exchange of scriptons, which are a type of virtual particles mediating the force of subject mastery.

There was an RI reunion last Saturday, which was pretty fun! The two conditions for proper reminiscence are people and place, both of which were present on Saturday night. A very respectable turnout from 4F. Question on many people's minds was "Where is Ruimin?"

I really need to make sure I keep fit. After all, I need to take IPPT this year. I should set some target for myself, like maybe 10 chin-ups. My latest triglyceride levels are good, but my LDL cholesterol levels are pretty bad.

40 Minutes

That's the time it took me to travel the distance from my place to Pioneer JC by bike on Thursday. Moderately brisk pace with minimal load. It's roughly 10.5 km according to the street directory.

This is comparable to the time it takes for me to walk to the Boon Lay bus interchange, wait for and take bus 180, then walk to PJC. The one time I took that bus (which goes along the same route as the one I cycle along), the journey was about 25 minutes. If I don't take a feeder bus, it's still a 10 minute walk to the school from the bus stop.

Will try to cycle to school when I can, once I figure out the necessary (where to park my bike, where to shower, shoes and clothing arrangements). Traffic and timing might be tricky. Should avoid rush hour. Weather needs to cooperate. Cannot be carrying much stuff when cycling.

Exercise is good for you. So is the feeling of overtaking a car.

New Bicycle

Aleoca Crossbreed X.5 700C 21 Speed Hybrid Bike, from Carrefour (Plaza Singapura).

Raison d'ĂȘtre: occasional commute from home to work and back so I have one more way to incorporate exercise into my daily routine.

Customer Service

For the first time in my life, the supermarket cashier lady (at NTUC) thanked me when I said I didn't want a plastic bag! Thanks to the good efforts of BYOB day.

I was pleasantly surprised that the guy from Subway at Jurong Point remembered that I liked my footlong sub packed in two halves. And I just found out that the Garden Patty has cheese in it... Is cheese grown in a garden?!
